I’m Philippa Marthaller, known by many as Pip. I enjoy gentle walks in the woods, arts and crafts and reading humorous poetry. I also like travelling and purposely getting a bit lost then eating curious-looking foods.
Most of all, though, I love language – particularly the English language: functional grammar, etymology, corpus linguistics, pragmatics – all of it fascinates me.
Back in 2004, this love of language manifested itself when I decided to become an EFL teacher. I got my first teaching job in Japan and set about learning to teach English and learning Japanese. Then I moved to Poland and learnt a little of that, then later Czechia. While teaching English and academic skills I did an MA in Applied Linguistics.
I settled back in my native Surrey, England a few years ago. I knew I wanted to formally extend my passion for helping people through my language knowledge. Then in 2022, I discovered the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), which provided a gateway into being a professional proofreader. I completed their proofreading courses and benefited from their shared wisdom. Since then, I have been supporting businesses, organisations and students in achieving their goals.
